Types of Area Networks

Almost all computer networks are labeled with the words "area networks". The most common classification is based on their size. Examples of these are:

  • LANs - Local Area Networks
  • WLANs - Wireless Local Area Networks
  • WANs - Wide Area Networks
  • SANs - Small Area Networks, System Area Networks, Storage Area Networks

LANs - Local Area Networks

This is a small area network and typically is one that connects up the various computer facilities in an office or building. Usually LANs are controlled, owned and operated by a single entity, office or company, and devices within LANs are connected by Ethernet.

WANs - Wide Area Networks

A WAN spans a large area with the Internet being the largest WAN in existence. The Internet has global presence with virtually every part being connected. The WAN consists of a disparate group of LANs with routers connecting them to the WANs. Connectivity is achieved through the use of technologies such as ATM, Frame Relay, VPN, Point to Point., etc.
